Balingup Small Farm Field Day
Anyway as it was my first time with a stall at Balingup I was very thankful of local Troy Dowling’s (Permie Designer, nursery man and Balingup Seed Savers organiser) offer to pitch a stall near his nursery for company and synergy.
I think he was hoping I would be bored with a lack of interest and help him sell his plants. But the PermaculatureWest stall was anything but, I didn’t go for 5 minutes, between 9-4 without talking to someone about what permaculture was, what local training was available, what courses where on in Perth and how we were going starting up local permie self help groups and seed saving groups.
Visitor numbers were good but when it got hot most people left so it wasn’t as effective as some years apparently. We got 20 emails and details of interested people, 1 new member. Adding that to last years signups, and other outreach program we are starting to get enough contacts in the South West to start to group up folks and encourage local groups to form.
Most importantly this time I got to touch base with the Margret River Permies, Miles Durand, James Cranfield, and Byron Joel (I think that was the three amigoes). They are looking to ramp up and expand so we need to provide as much support as possible.
I also got to spend a bit more time with Troy and talk plants which was the highlight of the trip. He has the best range of Permie plants I have seen and actually propergates and sells and spreads the love unlike a lot of us who hoard it and go out bush.
Here are some photo’s mainly to give people an idea of what a PermacultureWest stall can look like, we need a bit more gear, and some alternative technology and other props but can certainly spread some good information and get the word out with a quick easily set up. Anyone interest in helping the permaculture association on its stalls and community outreach days, for example National Permaculture Day May 1st please let us know, we would love your help. Perth Royal Ag Show is again shaping up as a big outreach and time commitment for the association so as per last year we are looking for people keen to be involved.
